NEW DELHI: A report by the BBC network revealed a recent analysis by Climate Action Tracker (CAT). It inferred that the goals of United Nations Paris Climate Agreement may be getting “within reach.” The group from CAT examined various promises on tackling climate change from multiple nations, including carbon emission plans of the incoming President of United States, Joe Biden.

The agency said that if the countries will successfully fulfill their commitments, the rise in global temperatures could be contained to 2.1 degree Celsius by the end of the current century, rather than the previously estimated rise of 3 degrees Celsius. This difference of 0.9 degree Celsius can have far-reaching consequences for the lives and livelihoods of hundreds of millions of people around the world.

Started in 2009 as a joint effort between the Climate Analytics and New Climate Institute, CAT has been providing independent analysis on climate change to policymakers for more than a decade. It tracks climate action by governments and measures it against the Paris Agreement’s aim of “holding warming well below 2 degree Celsius, and pursuing efforts to limit warming to 1.5 degree Celsius”.
