2,000 electric buses to ply on Chennai roads

CHENNAI: M R Vijayabhaskar, Transport Minister, announced that steps have been initiated to introduce 2,000 electric buses in the city on June 10.

After a review meeting with officials, Vijayabhaskar said, “In the first phase, approximately 500 buses will be introduced in Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore. Soon Chennai will have these buses.”

For initiation of this move the government has signed an agreement “Clean Bus Declaration” with C40 cities, a climate leadership group. With this agreement the government is looking forward to pave way for promoting pollution free mode of public transport and 12,000 BS-IV buses, added Vijayabhaskar.

Tenders have also been invited for making 24.20 lakh smart cards for students who take government buses for travelling for free. Vijayabhaskar said, “Soon, the Chief Minister will distribute free passes formally to students. Until then, they are allowed to travel to their schools free of cost if they come in uniform. Instructions have been given to all drivers and conductors in this regard. College students can show their old passes and travel on government buses”.
