MUMBAI: In south Mumbai’s crowded area of Dongri, a 100-year-old building collapsed leaving behind four dead and over 40 trapped, today morning at 11:40 am, July 16. As per the reports, eight people have been rescued so far.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) formed three large teams looking for survivors at the site. The Dongri area was full of dilapidated buildings on narrow lanes which flooded in heavy rain in the past weeks.
Due to the narrow lanes, ten ambulances and fire trucks that arrived at the spot are parked some distance away from the building.
The authorities labeled it as a ‘Level 2’ incident, Level 1 is considered to be the most serious as per the measuring systems measuring the severity of a collapse.
Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, told the reporters, “The building was 100 years old. We have given permission to redevelop that area… We will know after investigation if the redevelopment initiative was delayed. Right now we are focusing on rescuing trapped people.”
